Grades of Rum

Sugar caneThe grades and different types of rum depend on where and how the rum was produced.

There are light rums that have very little flavor, gold rums which are generally aged and get their dark color from aging in wooden barrels.

Spiced rums are spiced with different spices and are darker in color while true “dark rum” is a grade darker than gold rum. It has been aged longer in heavily charred barrels.

Flavored rums have been infused with fruit flavors or coconut. Overproof rum is as high as 160 proof. Premium rum has more character and flavor and are generally consumed without other ingredients.
